With about 2500 residents, the town of Sylva serves as the county seat of Jackson County. However, it wasn't always that way. Originally, the village of Webster was established as the county seat but changed to Sylva in 1914.

Covering 1,100 acres, Pinnacle Park provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Visitors can hike to the pinnacle, which sits at an elevation of 5000 feet, and the view of town below.

Southwestern Community College in Sylva offers more than 50 degree, certificate and diploma programs including GED preparation and options to transfer to a four-year university.
